Three years after the 1990 introduction of the all-new Diablo, Lamborghini rolled out the next evolution in the Marcello Gandini-designed devil in the Diablo VT, the letters standing for Viscous Traction and a whole-new level of road-holding performance. The Diablo’s basic layout remained unchanged. The massive 5.7L V-12 engine was still snuggled between the rear wheels, its 5-speed transmission extending forward into the cockpit beneath the wide transmission tunnel. The driveshaft ran back alongside the oil sump to the differential, powering the rear axle shafts.
In contrast to the original Diablo, the VT’s transmission also incorporated a forward-extending driveshaft with a viscous coupling to power the front wheels. Rather than being in use full time, the front axles were fed power by the viscous coupling in proportion to the demand created whenever the engine overcame the traction at the rear, to a maximum of 15 percent. While most magazine testing showed little if any improvement in the Diablo’s outright numbers, the VT’s real-world feel inspired much more confidence in those fortunate enough to sample its 490-plus horsepower and overwhelming torque.
There were obvious improvements; power rack-and-pinion steering, electronically self-adjusting Koni shock absorbers, more efficient Brembo disc brakes and improved airflow to the cabin, brakes and cooling system. The Diablo VT’s clean, sinuous styling is matched inside in the elegantly finished interior, where hand-stitched Italian leather covers almost every surface, including the padded wheel and gated shifter. The beautiful 1995 Lamborghini Diablo VT offered here is a splendid, recently serviced U.S.-market car driven a mere 28,213 kilometers (17,530 miles) since new.
Finished in classic Rossa Red with a black interior with red piping, it features the optional factory rear wing, power windows and air conditioning. Always kept in a climate-controlled garage, it remains in stellar condition, ready to provide the rarified driving experience only possible in a Lamborghini.
