Lamborghini’s Diablo debuted in 1991 to rave reviews, but its birth was not immediately a matter of celebration. Chrysler management panned Marcello Gandini’s original design as repeating the same mistakes they judged he’d made with the Countach, specifically poor outward vision and busy aerodynamics. Smoothing the contours of Gandini’s work in the wind tunnel produced the Diablo’s final, compellingly beautiful shape, which nonetheless still suggested the best of the Countach’s sweeping profile, forward cockpit and pronounced tail section.
The introduction of Viscous Traction variable all-wheel drive only improved the Diablo’s already fantastic handling, and in 1995 a Roadster version joined the coupe. By 1999, the Diablo boasted larger 18-inch wheels, an Audi-redesigned dash layout, fixed covered headlights and a snarling 5.7L/530 HP V-12 engine mated to a 5-speed gearbox topped with a precise gated shifter. This 1999 Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster is exceptionally rare by virtue of its special-order Titanium Silver Metallic paint, which is matched with a Black leather interior with Grey piping and accent stitching.
Sparingly driven and showing just 30,188 miles, it features the visually stunning mid-mounted V-12, 5-speed manual transmission, hydraulic front lift system for ramp clearance, an aftermarket exhaust system, aftermarket stereo head unit with 6-disc CD player with remotes and on-board navigation. The Diablo’s polished alloy wheels, which closely recall the Countach’s, are shod with newer BF Goodrich radial tires and are slowed by cross-drilled and vented disc brakes with Rosso Vik painted calipers. The car is fresh from a $12,500 major service and now features front end clear bra protection including leading edge surfaces. The owner’s manual, tools, remotes and a car cover are included.
