Lamborghini’s legendary Countach was in its 11th year of production when the company began development on its replacement, the Diablo, whose name followed the Lamborghini tradition of naming its cars after famous fighting bulls. Marcello Gandini, who also designed the Countach, penned the Diablo’s original design, which reprised many of the Countach’s sharp edges. However, Lamborghini’s Chrysler overlords took over the design process, using wind tunnel studies to smooth Gandini’s original concept. The result was a more integrated appearance that eschewed the Countach’s overwrought intake scoops and achieved an improved 0.31 aerodynamic drag coefficient.
The Diablo’s 5.7L 48-valve V-12 engine explodes with 492 HP to propel the car to an estimated top speed of over 200 MPH, while vented 13-inch front and 11.2-inch rear disc brakes provide amazing stopping power without the need for ABS. The Diablo also offers vastly improved interior ergonomics in the form of more supportive seats, combined steering wheel and instrument pod adjustment and better outward vision.
