Take the lithe athleticism and sensational performance of the 1948 Jaguar XK120, add nine years of road car evolution, a broader and roomier body, a one-piece curved windshield and technological spin-offs from five Le Mans victories, and you end up with the 1957 Jaguar XK150. Top of the tree was the plush drophead coupe, which was more expensive than both the fixed head coupe and roadster. In 1959, when this XK150 drophead was delivered new to California, its port-of-entry price of $4,620 was a full $1,000 more than the spartan roadster.

With its tailored cabriolet-style folding top, which stowed neatly below a fitted boot cover, the drophead was altogether more refined with a top that was easier to raise and lower than the roadster’s removable affair and provided much improved weather protection for both passengers and the leather and carpeted interior. The engine was, of course, the famed 3.4L twin overhead-cam inline-6, which had powered its forbears and C- and D-Type Le Mans winners. As fitted to the XK150 with a revised cylinder head, the XK unit was rated at 210 HP. This more than offset the weight increase over the XK140, propelling the XK150 to 126 MPH in road tests, with 60 MPH coming up in around 8.5 seconds.

To arrest its progress was Jaguar’s “secret weapon,” the all-around Dunlop disc brakes that played a key part in the 1953 Le Mans win and with which the XK150 was one of the earliest road car applications. Powered by a matching-numbers 3.4L inline-6, this 1959 Jaguar XK150 Drophead Coupe has spent all its life in California since it was sold new at Dover Motors of Yuba City, California, and it features the eminently useful overdrive on the 4-speed manual transmission, which makes for more relaxed high-speed touring at lower revs. The subject of an older restoration, its white body is complemented by a black convertible top, red interior and wide whitewall tires on chrome spoked wheels.

In keeping with its luxury, all-weather, fast touring characteristics and an optional chrome luggage rack is fitted to the rear.
