  • An original LHD, Special Equipment export model

During WWII, Jaguar founder William Lyons and his staff designed what would be the world’s first high-volume, twin-cam automobile engine. After the war, a short-wheelbase chassis and a two-seat sports roadster body were married to this new engine, and when the XK120 debuted at the 1948 Earl’s Court Motor Show, one journalist commented, “all preconceived notions as to what was a series-production sports car disappeared overnight.” From this point, the iconic XK redefined Jaguar as a builder of exceptional sports cars that also offered exceptional value.

Its inline six-cylinder engine, originally producing 160 horsepower, was mated with a four-speed manual transmission and provided phenomenal performance. The new car’s model designation, intended to represent its top speed, proved an understatement when factory test driver Ron Sutton was clocked on a Belgian road at over 132 miles per hour! In competition, the XK120 quickly chalked up numerous important victories, and its basic engine design powered Jaguars to five victories at Le Mans between 1951 and 1957.

Production of the XK120 continued into 1954, with the Roadster joined by the Fixed-Head Coupe in 1951 and the Drophead Coupe in 1953. Only 2,680 Fixed-Head Coupes were produced, primarily aimed at the American export market. This original left-hand drive model from 1953 is, according to its chassis number, equipped with the “SE” Special Equipment package, including a 180-bhp engine with high-lift camshafts. A recent inspection confirms that the engine number stamping matches the data plate in the firewall. A complete, smooth-running car, it was refurbished in 2006/2007 and benefits from proper storage.

Finished in silver over dark red leather upholstery with matching carpeting, this is both an attractively presented and particularly sporting Jaguar, perfect for spirited driving in most any climate.
