Conçue et construite en seulement quelques mois, la XK120 fit ses débuts à Earls Court en 1948 où ce roadster à l'allure unique fit sensation. Le cœur de la voiture était, bien sûr, le fabuleux moteur XK, un six cylindres 3,4 litres doté des derniers perfectionnements techniques, double arbre à cames en tête, cylindres en alliage d'aluminium, vilebrequin à sept paliers et une puissance maximale de 160 ch. Il était installé dans un châssis qui était grosso modo une version raccourcie de celui de la berline Mark V présentée simultanément, avec la suspension avant indépendante à barres de torsion de William Heynes.
Jaguar ne perdit pas de temps pour prouver que la vitesse de pointe revendiquée par la XK120 n'était pas une blague. En mai 1949, sur l'autoroute Aeltre de Jabbeke, un exemplaire capoté avec ses side screens en place atteignit 126 mph (202 km/h) et 132 mph (212 km/h) sans capote et sans pare-brise mais avec le dessous caréné.
La XK120 établissait de nouvelles normes en matière de confort, de tenue de route et de performance pour les sportives britanniques et, se conformant à la tradition Jaguar, il n'y avait pas d'équivalent à ce prix-là. Les versions coupé et cabriolet suivirent et pour les clients qui trouvaient le modèle de série trop lent, il y avait l'option Special Equipment (SE) qui portait la puissance à 180 ch. Avec l'un des deux moteurs et sans tenir compte du type de carrosserie, la XK120 était capable d'un vrai 120 mph (193 km/h) et pouvait tenir une vitesse de croisière élevée. La XK120 fut produite jusqu'en 1954 et allait s'avérer la plus populaire de la série XK, avec 12 078 exemplaires construits.
Cette XK120 roadster a été livrée neuve à Max Hoffman, distributeur Jaguar pour la côte est à New York, aux États-Unis. Le certificat du Jaguar Heritage Trust qui l'accompagne révèle que la voiture a été construite le 27 février 1952 et a quitté l'usine de Browns Lane dans une livrée gris Birch avec un intérieur de couleur biscuit et rouge et une capote gris français. L'historique de la XK aux États-Unis n'est pas connue, le document le plus ancien du dossier étant les papiers d'immatriculation au Royaume-Uni de 1998, mentionnant une date de première immatriculation (au Royaume-Uni ) en 1996.
Le vendeur a acheté la Jaguar en avril 2016 (facture de vente au dossier). Figurent au dossier le passeport FIVA émis au Danemark en 2007 pour M. Palle Murmann, qui a participé aux Mille Miglia Storica en 2009 avec Gregers Bach (concurrent numéro 144). Un article de magazine illustré et des photos correspondantes sont disponibles. Immatriculée en Europe, cette XK120 éligible aux Mille Miglia est prête à satisfaire son heureux prochain propriétaire.

Conceived and constructed in but a few months, the XK120 debuted at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show where the stunning-looking roadster caused a sensation. The XK120's heart was, of course, the fabulous XK engine. A 3.4-litre 'six' embodying the best of modern design, it boasted twin overhead camshafts running in an aluminium-alloy cylinder head, seven main bearings and a maximum output of 160bhp. It went into a chassis that was essentially a shortened version of the simultaneously announced Mark V saloon's, featuring William Heynes' torsion bar independent front suspension. Jaguar lost no time in demonstrating that the XK120's claimed top speed was no idle boast.
In May 1949 on the Jabbeke to Aeltre autoroute, an example with its hood and side screens in place recorded a speed of 126mph and 132mph with the hood and windscreen detached and an under-tray fitted.
The XK120 set new standards of comfort, roadholding and performance for British sports cars and, in keeping with the Jaguar tradition, there was nothing to touch it at the price. Coupé and drophead coupé versions followed, and for customers who found the standard car too slow, there was the Special Equipment (SE) package which boosted power to 180bhp. With either engine and regardless of the type of bodywork, the XK120 was a genuine 120mph car capable of sustained high-speed cruising. The XK120 was produced until 1954 and would prove to be the most popular of the XK series, with 12,078 examples built.
This XK120 roadster was delivered new to Max Hoffman, Jaguar's East Coast distributor in New York, USA. Its accompanying Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate reveals that the car was manufactured on 27th February 1952 and left the Browns Lane factory finished in Birch Grey with Biscuit and Red interior trim and a French Grey soft-top. The XK's history in the USA is not known, the earliest paperwork on file being a (copy) UK registration document issued in 1998, recording the date of first (UK) registration as 1996.
The current vendor purchased the Jaguar in April 2016 (bill of sale on file). Also on file is a FIVA Identity Card issued in Denmark in 2007 to Mr Palle Murmann, who together with Gregers Bach competed in the Mille Miglia Storica in 2009 (competitor number '144'); an illustrated magazine article and related photographs are available. EU registered, this Mille Miglia-eligible XK120 is ready to delight the fortunate next owner.
