Following in the footsteps of the legendary Jaguar E-Type was no easy task, but the XJS, introduced in 1975, succeeded admirably, with its highly distinctive styling and grand touring character. Powered by the magnificent 5.3-litre V12, which had made its debut in the E-Type Series 3, it offered impressive performance combined with a level of comfort and quiet running unknown to its predecessor. Its main drawback, high fuel consumption, was addressed in 1981 with the “High Efficiency” version, featuring new cylinder heads designed by Michael May. This car naturally came with a luxurious finish, including electrically adjustable leather seats.
As a convertible, it was a particularly pleasant car to drive: it was equally at home on a leisurely drive along sunny country roads and covering long distances at speed, with its torque providing exceptional flexibility.
