Forward-thinking Jaguar founder William Lyons had little time for nostalgia when, in 1968, his XJ6 set the benchmark for a new class of car—the luxury sporting express. And neither did award-winning stylist Ian Callum in creating the latest-generation XJ, which had to compete in a now crowded field that Jaguar was the first to plow. Simply, as the British magazine Autocar noted, “For driving enjoyment the Jag eclipses conventional large saloons from Mercedes, BMW and Audi.
It is instead worthy of comparison with the likes of the Maserati Quattroporte and Porsche Panamera.” “Grace, Space and Pace” was how Jaguar once defined these core brand values, and the long-wheelbase 5.0L/470 HP supercharged V-8 in the four-seater XJ certainly delivers with 0-62 MPH coming up in 4.7 seconds, courtesy of the 8-speed ZF transmission; that’s quicker than an entry-level two-seater Porsche 911. Top speed is limited to the usual 155 MPH, but can be raised to 174 MPH with the Speed pack.
