The most important change to the Mk2-derived S-Type was, of course, the adoption of independent rear suspension similar to that of the E-Type sports car and Mk10 saloon. As well as the usual improvements to roadholding and ride quality associated with independent rear suspension, the new rear suspension set-up enabled Jaguar's designers to move the rear seats back 3", creating more leg room. Other interior changes included a Mk10-type fresh-air heating and ventilation system and all-new seats, the fronts having reclining backrests as well as being adjustable for height and reach.
There was also a much larger boot, similar in shape to the Mk10's, offering an impressive 20cu ft of luggage space compared to the Mk2's 12cu ft. Despite possessing superior handling and greater range than the Mk2, the S-Type has lived in the shadow of its illustrious predecessor and tends to be undervalued.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This this rarely seen S-Type 3.8 was delivered new in the stunning colors it wears today, Opalescent Gunmetal over Dark Blue leather, in September of 1964. A home-market example in right hand drive, it was distributed through Rothwell & Milbourne of Malvern and sold new by Goodall & Son to its first owner with the registration number "BNO 864 B".
The early history of this Jaguar is not known, but it made its way stateside in the previous millennium and received a repaint in its original color several decades ago. Put away for about three decades, it was recently recommissioned. Showing just over 64,000 miles—a figure believed to be from new—it is wonderfully resplendent inside with its nicely preserved original interior and rich burl wood veneers. The perfect vehicle for tours with the whole family, it truly embodies Jaguar's old motto – Grace, Pace, Space.
