Jaguar’s first production V-12 powerplant made its debut in the new Series III E-Type of 1971 and reinvigorated the performance that, in the preceding 6-cylinder Series II, had been significantly reined in by looming U.S. federal emissions regulations. At a stroke, the new Series III E-Type, with its all aluminum single-overhead cam 5.3L V-12 that was derived from the XJ13 Le Mans prototype project, was back on song. Breathing through four Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and rated at 264-272 HP, it also endowed the Series III E-Type with faster acceleration than any predecessor.
That was no mean feat, as the Series III V-12 roadster was larger than its forebears, being based on the longer 105-inch wheelbase of the Series II 2+2 fixed-head coupe. As a result, the cabin was roomier and better equipped. In addition, the all-around disc brakes were now ventilated at the front, the flared wheel arches now accommodated wider tires, and the anti-dive front-suspension system further improved road manners. With a much improved convertible top, the Series III V-12 was the most refined and sophisticated of the breed.
Though most buyers went for the tamer automatic option, this 1973 Series III V-12 roadster features the 4-speed manual transmission, which is certainly more sporting. Presented in the Jaguar factory color of British Racing Green with a black convertible top and a biscuit hide interior and matching carpets, it comes with the relatively rare option of a detachable hard top, along with optional chrome wire wheels. Jaguar’s V-12 mill is a classic in its own right and was introduced on the Series III E-Type at a time when only Ferrari and Lamborghini offered such an exotic configuration—at an equally exotic price compared with the eminently more affordable E-Type.
That was something to shout about, and the Series III E-Type proclaims it loud and clear with the V-12 emblem on the trunk lid and the glorious signature tune from those quad exhaust pipes.
