If you think force-aspired sport trucks are something new, maybe you haven’t been around. This first-year 1991 GMC Syclone Pickup has an odometer that reads 9,447 miles and is 1 of only 2,998 produced during a brief 2-year production window. A two-owner vehicle, the first 1st owner held onto it for 27 years, and for good reason. The road testers at Car and Driver magazine used it in an acceleration comparison with a Ferrari 348ts, clocking 0–60 MPH in 4.3 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 13.4 seconds at 98 MPH. PAS (Production Automotive Services) of Troy, Michigan, was subcontracted by GMC to do the final work on the Syclones, which were then offered through GMC’s normal dealer network.
Power came from a Mitsubishi turbocharged 4.3L/280 HP GMC V-6 engine rated at 350 lb. ft. of Torque. This was backed up with a 4-speed 4L60 automatic transmission and the model featured all-wheel drive via the BorgWarner transfer case and limited slip differential equipment. There were also special adaptions for high-performance braking (the first production truck with 4-wheel anti-lock braking), a high-volume fuel system, and a high-capacity transmission cooling package. Indeed, though 1992 production was already fully curtailed, there were special Syclones selected for work purposes at the 1992 Indianapolis 500, helping ensure their legacy.
All came in identical appearance, with a black exterior featuring unique “Syclone” badging and flat lower aero accents. Inside was matching black velour upholstery with red piping and black and gray interior components. Among the standard equipment was a special instrumentation layout that included a boost gauge, air conditioning, both power windows and locks, and even cruise control. There is an AM/FM/cassette player with an equalizer here as well. The outside of this example shows off the soft bed cover and cast wheels with GMC center caps and blackwall tires. This sale even includes original paperwork from its 1991 delivery.
Sport trucks are hot, and here is one version with a fierce reputation, not often available, and is certainly worth adding to your stable of muscle machinery.
