Having recently completed a frame-off, nut-and-bolt restoration, this 1984 GMC Sierra Classic Pickup benefited from a rebuilt V-8 engine with a custom dress-up kit, a dual exhaust system and a rebuilt automatic transmission. Finished in white, the single-cab, long-bed pickup retains highly original sheet metal and is trimmed with a tan, bench seat interior with a dark brown dash top and matching carpet, air conditioning and an AM/FM radio. Rolling on new BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tires with Rally Wheels, the 4-wheel drive uses Warn manual locking hubs.
Despite popular myth, engineers and designers behind the all-new 1973 Chevrolet and GMC full-size truck line did not rely on bricks, T-squares, rulers and blocks for styling inspiration. As contrary as their looks suggest, extensive wind tunnel testing and computer-aided design software was used to determine the shape that offered the least amount of wind resistance possible. While it sounds like hogwash, it’s entirely true and set the direction for GM’s line of down-sized, full-size cars that debuted for 1977.
Largely in response to the 1979 fuel crisis, engineers and designers took the Rounded Line trucks back to the wind tunnels to see if any additional slipperiness could be added and found that there was. To boot, they found a way to shed almost 300 pounds off the curb weight. This lighter and more aerodynamic version would become available for 1981 and was likely the most aerodynamic full-size truck on the market.
