By the time the third-generation Ford Taurus SHO (Super High Output) rolled around in the latter part of the 1990s, Ford had brought a more refined, less radical design to its high-performance Taurus—but that’s not to say Ford had completely tamed the tiger. The SHO still differed from its standard-level counterpart, featuring different seats, alloy wheels, bumpers, a fin on the driver’s side windshield wiper that helped keep the wiper in place at high speeds and a V-8 drivetrain (hence the need for the previous addition).

The addition of the 3.4L/235 HP V-8 engine featuring a Cosworth block and Yamaha heads was unique to the third-generation Taurus SHO, though the car was now equipped with an AX4N automatic transmission, with Ford dropping the manual gearbox option for the high-performance variant. However, the third-generation Taurus SHO just wouldn’t be as big of a hit with consumers as previous generations had been, with sales for this generation peaking at just 9,000 units in 1997. Ultimately, as sales continued to plummet over the coming years, Ford decided to drop the SHO from its lineup when redesigning the Taurus for its fourth generation, set to debut for the new millennium.

The final third-generation Ford Taurus SHO rolled off the assembly line on June 18, 1999, marking the end of an era for the high-performance Taurus, at least until the manufacturer unveiled the fourth-generation SHO 10 years later at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show. This 1999 Ford Taurus SHO from the Ben and Karen’s Collection serves as an excellent example of the last of the third-generation SHOs and the only V-8 engine Taurus of its time. Wrapped in original black paint, the Taurus is propelled by a 3.4L/235 HP V-8 engine that pushes power through its automatic transmission and out to the pavement through new tires.

Meanwhile, the original gray leather interior is loaded with a slew of power options, a 6-disc CD changer, premium sound system and a moonroof. Recently serviced at the owner’s Ford dealership, this 1999 Ford Taurus SHO is ready to show its new owner exactly what that SHO meant.
