With just 2,458 miles on the odometer, this 2014 Ford Shelby GT500 from Big Al’s Collection presents an opportunity to own a nearly new, barely broken-in example of Ford’s super Mustang from the final year of its fifth (S-197) generation. That’s significant because it was the fifth-generation iteration that returned the Mustang to its retro styling roots. The car finally looked like a Mustang again, and the Shelby GT500 was the pinnacle of the breed. According to magazine road tests of the car when new, Ford’s performance benchmarks for the GT500 showed 650 HP, 600 lb-ft of torque and a top speed of 200 MPH, all of which were met or beaten.
Rated output of the Shelby’s 5.8L modular V-8 is 662 HP and 631 lb-ft, numbers reached with the help of an Eaton Twin Vortices supercharger (its 2.3L displacement the same size as the EcoBoost engine offered in today’s Mustang). To manage all that power, Ford backed the blown Mod motor with a Tremec TR660 6-speed manual transmission, its lever topped by a classic cue-ball-style shift knob. The task of planting that power on the road was given to a staggered set of sticky Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar tires, 285/35ZR-20 in the rear and 265/40ZR-19 in front, mounted on this car around the upgraded SVT Performance Package’s alloy wheels.
Looking through the wheel spokes, the 15-inch front disc brakes with Brembo 6-piston calipers are visible; the rear discs have 13.8-inch rotors and single-piston calipers. The Shelby’s Oxford White paint with Deep Impact Blue stripes is nicely complemented by the Charcoal Black leather upholstery on the sport bucket seats, which has its own blue accents and embroidered Shelby snakes. In-car entertainment is provided by Ford’s SYNC system and Shaker Pro audio components, and a dual-zone climate control system keeps passengers on both sides of the car in their comfort zone.
