Little known fact: The father of the GTO, automotive marketing genius Jim Wangers, was also responsible for creating the Cobra II for Ford. Following his career at Pontiac, Wangers founded Motortown Corporation, an aftermarket contractor that added decals, scoops and spoilers to mid-1970s cars. Following huge success with the “Li’l Wide Track” package for the Pontiac Astre, Wangers approached Ford with the idea for a 1976 Cobra II based on the Mustang II hatchback. With stripes and hood scoop that recalled the Shelby GT350, plus a rear spoiler, Motortown’s Cobra II was approved as a separate Mustang model.
Hatchbacks built at Ford’s Dearborn Assembly Plant were delivered to Motortown’s nearby facility for completion, then returned to Ford as Cobra IIs for shipping to dealers. Wangers hoped to sell 5,000; Ford dealers sold over 27,000, partially due to the fact that Farrah Fawcett drove a blue-with-white Cobra II in the hit TV show Charlie’s Angels. Few 1976 Cobra IIs have survived, with even fewer in low-mileage, highly original condition like this white-with-blue 1976 Cobra II that was in the care of its original owner until 2023.
With just 12,286 miles, the Cobra II is powered by its factory 302 CI V-8 and 4-speed manual transmission and also boasts its original Polar White paint with blue stripes, Bright Blue interior, and Goodyear Steelgard tires. Indicative of the newness, the factory chalk marks are still visible on the undercarriage. Hooker headers and chrome sidepipes were added by the original owner. Equipped with the factory rear window louvers and cruise control, the low-mileage Cobra II comes with its original warranty card, registrations, owner’s manual and dealer brochure, along with a Charlie’s Angels’ Greenlight Cobra II die-cast and a framed photo of Farrah Fawcett on the hood of her Cobra II.
The 1976 model was the only Cobra II built by Jim Wangers’ Motortown; Ford moved the conversion in-house for 1977-78.
