Announced to the press in October 2018, Ford unveiled the latest version of the iconic GT supercar. This new variant was pitched as the intermediate option between the standard GT and the Competition Series cars. Ford themselves stated: ‘The Ford GT Carbon Series will be shredding tracks soon, as the lightest of the road-going Ford supercars—and unlike its sibling racer, it will want to be driven home after the time sheets are collected’. As with the standard GT, potential buyers had to apply to Ford to earn the right to purchase one of these rare cars. Just 50 Ford GT Carbon Series were produced, with the specification of each car subject to the desires of the chosen clients.
The exterior of the GT Carbon Series is a carbon fibre extravaganza, with the body panels, bonnet, bumpers, doors, front splitter, rear diffuser, shell, underbody shield, and retractable wing all constructed from the space-age material. The use of carbon fibre extends to the 20-inch wheels, which feature gloss exposed carbon, and are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. The extensive use of carbon fibre along with a titanium exhaust, wheel nuts, and polycarbonate rear hatch, resulted in a weight saving of 18 kg relative to a standard Ford GT. Ford stated this model is constructed with the most exposed carbon fibre of any Ford GT.
Customers could choose to have their Carbon Series painted in a variety of colours, but were given the option of four accent colours—blue, orange, red or silver—for the callipers, centre stripe and mirror caps.
Under the rear hatch lies a mid-mounted 3.5-litre V-6 engine producing 660 horsepower, which is coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The results of this impressive powertrain were reported by Car and Driver, recording a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.0 seconds and covering a quarter-mile in a blisteringly fast 10.8 seconds, achieving a speed of 134 mph. Stopping power is provided by Brembo callipers and carbon ceramic disc brakes on all four corners, with the suspension featuring electronic active damping, and a front lift system.
This Ford GT Carbon Series, serial number L212, was ordered in 2020, and delivered new in March 2021 to its first and only owner, based in Cologne, Germany. They specified this example to the same configuration as the show car that was presented at the Special Equipment Market Association--or SEMA—in Las Vegas, Nevada. The carbon fibre bodywork of this Ford GT is coated in Leadfoot Grey paint, and was built with the Carbon Orange Graphics package as the accent colour, featuring a two-tone carbon and orange centre stripe, and orange wing mirrors. To further match the accent colours, the car was specified with orange Brembo callipers, which vividly contrast the glossy carbon fibre 20-inch wheels.
Inside the cabin is a mixture of Ebony Alcantara and carbon fibre. The steering wheel is Formula 1-inspired and wrapped in Alcantara, matching the Alcantara Sparco seats, which feature frames constructed from carbon fibre. Despite the fitment of a tubular-steel roll cage, Ford balanced the mix of performance and driver comforts by equipping this vehicle with air conditioning, an adjustable steering wheel, adjustable seats, a radio, and the Sync 3 technology pack.
The owner has retained the Ford build sheet, specification sheet and window stickers that detail the exact specifications of this model, and confirm it is a German-delivery example. Further to these documents is the Ford GT order kit, sent to each customer that Ford selected to order a GT Carbon Series, designed to showcase the variety of options for this model. The order kit is presented in a carbon fibre box that includes interior colour options, paint chips, and various wheel styles. Serial number L212 has never been registered on the road, and is supplied with the relevant certificate of conformity (COC). The odometer displays just 113 km at the time of cataloguing.
