During the 1960s, Ford launched its Total Performance marketing campaign, illustrating the company’s interest in producing vehicles that were sporty in nature and in practice. Cars like the Mustang emerged alongside more quiet offerings like the Galaxie 7-Litre and Fairlane 390 and 427 while more upscale offerings like Thunderbird could also pack a serious punch. If a buyer had the right sales pro, they could pretty much equip any Ford to be as quick as it could be, budget permitting. Carroll Shelby was enlisted to breathe additional speed and handling into the Mustang by producing the GT350 and later GT500, not to mention the Shelby Cobra, powered by either a Ford 289 or 427.
The ultimate show of performance was the GT40, a race car aimed squarely to put Ford on the international performance map, placing them among the greatest names in motorsports. It did well, scoring a 1-2-3 win at Le Mans in 1966 and subsequent wins through 1969, records that have yet to be broken. Ford set out to celebrate its 100-year anniversary by reviving a number of iconic models and classic styles such as Thunderbird and Mustang, but truly wowed the press and public alike (again) by introducing the new Ford GT. It was bigger all around than the original GT40 and packed a lot of creature comforts the original was oblivious to.
This 2006 has only traveled 3.7 miles from new and features all four of the factory options: racing stripes, painted calipers, a McIntosh stereo and BBS wheels. The centerpiece of the Port Clinton Ford showroom for several years, this GT is finished in Tungsten with silver racing stripes and presents in very new condition, right down to an interior covered in plastic. To be sold with sealed books and cover, it’s also got two keys still in plastic, an airbag recall replacement part in the box, all the interior tags, the original invoice, MSRP, MSO, the Marti Report and a clean CarFax. It’s even got the replacement center tunnel in the box.
This is one of those great moments to acquire a new 2006 Ford GT, one of the most sought after, highly collectible cars ever built.
