Ford established its leadership in the full-size car market with the XL version of its popular Galaxie 500 series. Initially offered only in 2-door hardtop and convertible form, the XL gave buyers a luxurious interior complete with pleated vinyl bucket seats, brightly decorated door panels and a floor-shift center console. Ford did not stop at this higher trim level, however; the XL meant more horsepower to go with its Thunderbird-grade accommodations.
A genuine Z-code, this outstanding 1964 Galaxie 500 XL convertible is powered by Ford’s venerated 390 CI V-8 engine, in this case fitted with an aluminum intake manifold and 4-barrel carburetor to produce a generous 300 HP – an entertaining package when coupled with this example’s 4-speed manual transmission and power brakes.
