By the final year of the fifth generation of Fords F-Series trucks, a variety of options and trim levels were available to fit the needs of almost any buyer. Among those were the Ranger, Ranger XLT, Sport and Sport Custom, but there was a lesser-known package that allowed buyers to get almost every high-end option but at a lower price: The Explorer Special. Available in four different trim levels dubbed A, B, C and D, it featured options like polished spear moldings, added exterior trim around the drip rails, power steering & brakes, swing-lock mirrors, automatic transmission and even air conditioning.

The Explorer package also featured unique interior and exterior color combinations not available with other trims. This particular 1972 F-100 features the D-level package, which consists of every single option available in the Explorer trim. Finished in Wind Blue, it has a matching blue interior with bench seat. It’s powered by its original 360ci V8 with a Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. For driving comfort, it came factory-equipped with power steering and brakes, as well as air conditioning. The exterior has all the trim options, complete with the side spear moldings, bright windshield trim and drip rails, swing-lock mirrors and chrome bumpers.

As a largely original example, the truck comes documented with a framed Elite Marti Report, original Ford warranty card, and numerous brochures and sales literature from 1972. Although Ford made over 390,000 F-100s in 1972, only a handful came equipped with the Explorer package – and even fewer retain all the original components and options today. With exceptional documentation and a high level of originality, F-100s like this are a rare find.
