The Ford Escort is a small family car that was manufactured from 1968 to 2004 and was produced in six different model derivatives. The fourth version of the Ford Escort was launched in March 1986, with only a small number of changes over its predecessor. Optional new features included a mechanical anti‐lock braking system (standard on RS Turbo models), a fuel computer on fuel-injected models and a heated windscreen. These changes were welcome at a time when the Escort was faced with a host of new competitors; General Motors had brought out a new version of the Vauxhall Astra 18 months earlier, shortly after Volkswagen had introduced the Mk. II Golf.
As well as an all-new interior, a new derivative of the CVH engine was introduced, as well as numerous suspension tweaks to address the long-standing criticisms of the Escort's handling and ride quality. In 1988 Ford developed electronic fuel injection system replacing the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system in the XR3i.
This delightful 1.6i Cabriolet has only had one previous keeper and has been owned by the vendor since 31st May 1991. Originally registered on 17th February 1989, this Escort was supplied by Bristol Street Motors and still bears their name on the number plates. Service records are supplied with the car, although there have been periods where this Escort ‘Rattlesnake’ has been off the road, garaged and SORN, hence the very low mileage. The paintwork is in good order as is the largely original trim, even the Ford sound system is present and correct. These are great cars with the 1.6 CVH engine and well tried and trusted powerplant.
