This 1982 Ford Crown Victoria Country Squire is a re-creation of the "Wagon Queen Family Truckster" seen in the 1983 film "National Lampoon's Vacation." Based on Hollywood director John Hughes' autobiographical short story "Vacation '58," National Lampoon's smash hit movie "Vacation" debuted in 1983 with an all-star cast headed by Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo portraying Clark and Ellen Griswold.
Chronicling the Griswold family's painful "family bonding" highway road trip from Chicago to the fictional Walley Word, billed as "America's Favorite Family Fun Park," "Vacation" also starred one of the most visually challenged automotive monstrosities ever conceived - the Wagon Queen Family Truckster. Based on an early-1980s Ford LTD station wagon, this vehicle is sometimes derided by some commentators as the real reason station wagons were cast aside for minivans in the 1980s. Garish and equipped with nearly every tacky luxury car cliche known to man at the time, the Truckster was designed by George Barris.
Five were created for the movie, primarily for the many horrendous stunts, including an epic jump by movie stunt coordinator Dick Ziker, which he performed to satisfy a bet against other crew members. Based on a proper 1982 Ford LTD station wagon and featuring painful (to some eyes) pale avocado paint, this stunning and faithfully executed replica of the Wagon Queen Family Truckster movie cars was acquired in reportedly good running order by Dr. Berkowitz in July 2017 from a Bensenville, IL, couple who owned it since October 1995.
The full Family Truckster conversion was completed next to great effect, with all the faux wood-grain panels, identification logos and badges one expects, plus the infamous stacked grille up front. Power is delivered by a Ford 302ci V8 engine and automatic transmission, as expected. Roof racks, luggage and dealer plates from the fictional selling dealer, Lou Glutz Motors, finish this motoring monstrosity's presence and authenticity.
