The 1936 model year heralded some major changes for the Ford lineup, which were well received by the public as some of the struggles of the Great Depression eased that year. The company sold some 930,000 cars overall, and of that group, just 0.6 percent, 5,600 units, were configured in this unique convertible sedan design. A beautiful restoration on a California car that has resided in the Monterey Bay area for many years, it would be difficult to find fault with this vehicle both as-built and at-present. The styling cues for 1936 included increased body width, a repositioned engine placement, rounder body lines and a classic vertically ribbed grille design.
Under the hood of this car is the 221 CI flathead Ford V-8 engine rated at 85 HP and backed by a 3-speed manual transmission. Fords now used brakes that consisted of 4-wheel hydraulic actuated drums. However, it is the color combination that moves this car into the realm of extraordinary. Painted beige with a matched beige convertible top, the exterior features exterior hood-louver inserts, a leading-edge mastiff hood ornament, the rear-placed continental tire and stylish optional dual outside mirrors. Unlike the phaeton, all the side windows roll up and the side center dividers are removable.
This car has a brown leather interior with a burled-Walnut dash and door trim, in-dash temperature gauge, 3-spoke Art Deco-design steering wheel with V-8 center, desirable floor shifter and full door panels. The separate headlamp buckets, styled tail-lamp extensions, chrome wheel covers and wide whitewall tires complete a picture of automotive beauty. This sale will include 20 Ward’s Motor Record Books, vintage tags and plates, and an estimated $18,000 in parts and restoration receipts. There are excellent early Ford V-8s for sale on a regular basis, but this scarce example is refreshed for appreciation by those who desire a version that is a cut above the rest.
