Introduced in 1936, the Fiat 500 Topolino remained virtually unchanged through 1948. One of the smallest cars ever produced, it was a truly masterful concept that brought big car features into a small car. As such, it was remarkably advanced for the day with a 12-volt electrical system, 4-speed synchromesh transmission, a water-cooled inline 4-cylinder engine and hydraulic brakes. The engine was placed forward of the front axle, supplanting the radiator to the firewall, which allowed for the beautifully sloped front end and grille—quite the change in contemporary offerings, when most cars featured a blunt nose. The sloped front end also allowed for fantastic outward visibility.
This one is presented in a lovely two-tone combination of burgundy with black fenders. The steel wheels match the body and are wrapped with blackwall tires. The interior is inviting, presented in a tan cloth with a fine level of detailing and design to keep the eye interested. Rear-hinged doors add to the whimsical nature of the Topolino, a car well known for inspiring imaginations and the eagerness to drive and enjoy.
