World War II literally left gaping holes in Europe's infrastructure, including the production of automobiles. Management at Fiat would attempt to fill this hole with an affordable and versatile automobile. Fiat created the 600 and it became an instant success with more than 2.7 million cars sold. In fact, the 600 was so successful that in 1956 Fiat would come out with the 600 Multipla. Loosely designed as a station wagon, the Multipla was dispatched to be a multi-service vehicle useful to families and smaller motoring companies whether they be delivery based or taxi companies. The Multipla was offered in three versions.
The first version sat up to five people and the seats could be folded down to create a bed. The second version sat six people by utilizing bench seats that also collapsed into the floor to create a flat cargo deck. The third version was outfitted as a taxi and included a single front seat with a luggage rack and a bench seat behind a divider. Aside from the body work differences between the original 600 and the Multipla included a radiator, front wishbone suspension, different gear ratios allowing for heavier loads, interior lamps and larger fuel tank.
This 1960 Fiat 600 Multipla has undergone a no expense spared restoration that was completed in July of 2014 by a vintage Italian restoration specialist. It is finished in Baby Blue with a matching interior accompanied by White accents. This southern California car is fitted with a rear mounted 633cc 4-cylinder water-cooled engine that drives the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission and brings smiles to onlookers everywhere.
