In 1955 FIAT replaced its revolutionary Topolino small saloon, which had been around in one form or another since 1936, introducing the successor '600' model at that year's Geneva Salon. Historically significant as the first rear-engined FIAT, the 600 was a masterpiece of automotive packaging, cramming accommodation for four into the same 2,000mm wheelbase as the outgoing two-seater Topolino, which it undercut on price. The integral chassis/body featured independent suspension all round, while the 633cc water-cooled four-cylinder overhead-valve engine produced 22bhp, which was good enough for a top speed of 62mph.

The most significant upgrade to this outstandingly successful design occurred in 1960 with the introduction of the 600D, which featured a 767cc engine, improved lubrication and cooling systems, side window vents, key ignition, altered gearing and greatly improved performance.

In late 1964 conventional front-hinged doors were standardised, replacing the rear hinged 'suicide' variety, though this move was not universally popular. Although conceived as basic transport for the masses, the 600 would prove to be an extremely capable competition car; examples modified by Carlo Abarth turning in giant-killing performances on the racetrack, dominating their class and humbling larger-engined rivals. The 600/600D range proved a huge success with some 2.6 million sold by the end of production in 1970, though manufacture continued outside Italy for years to come.

Finished in Bianco Loren with Nappa brown interior and brown soft top, this early FIAT 600 Trasformabile was purchased by the vendor at Motore Vintage Dällikon, Switzerland in July 2020 (invoice on file). One of the nicest we have seen, it is fully restored and performed very well when taken on a short test drive by a Bonhams specialist. Fitted with a 'vintage'-style radio, the car is sold with cancelled Swiss Carte Grise.

FIAT 600 Trasformabile 1956
