As redolent of La Dolce Vita Italy as the immortal Vespa scooter, the 'beach car' concept is most famously embodied by Ghia's 'Jolly'. A novel and quintessentially Italian idea that first emerged in the 1950s, the Jolly transformed humble saloons such as FIAT's 500 and 600 from basic transport into conspicuous indicators of wealth. The Jolly found favour as courtesy transport for patrons of luxury hotels and golf courses or for use ashore after one had docked one's yacht on the Italian or French Riviera. Lacking doors and equipped with wickerwork seats, it was only practical as leisure transport, thus confirming its owner's status as someone who could afford a car 'just for fun'.
Given the success of the original, it is not at all surprising that someone would attempt an interpretation of the legendary Jolly beach car using a modern FIAT 500, this example being the work of a specialist Italian carrozzeria. To increase the stiffness of the open body, the shell has been reinforced with laser-cut steel plates and steel tubes, as used in roll-bars for rally cars; the body has then been contoured by hand. The seats have a steel underlying structure and are clad in wicker, the original seatbelts being retained, while the woodwork and chromework is in marine style.
This particular Jolly is based on a standard FIAT 500, and is powered by the 1.2-litre petrol engine driving via the manual gearbox. Registered in the European Union (with all modifications notified), this lovely and fun car is presented in effectively 'as new' condition.

Un'idea da fiaba e tipicamente italiana che è emersa per la prima volta negli anni '50, la Jolly ha trasformato delle umili utilitarie come la 500 e la 600 della FIAT, da vetture nate per soddisfarei bisogni basilari di spostamento a vistosi indicatori di ricchezza.
La Jolly veniva usata, soprattutto, come trasporto di cortesia per i clienti degli alberghi di lusso ed i campi da golf o come "tender" terrestre dopo aver attraccato lo yacht sulla Riviera italiana o francese. Priva di porte e dotata di sedili in vimini, era utilizzabile solo come vettura da tempo libero, confermando così lo status del proprietario, capace di potersi permettere un'automobile "da divertimento". Visto il successo dell'originale, non sorprende affatto che qualcuno possa tentare un'interpretazione della leggendaria auto da spiaggia Jolly, usando come base una moderna FIAT 500, come l'esemplare offerto, frutto del lavoro di una carrozzeria italiana specializzata.
Per aumentare la rigidità della carrozzeria aperta, il pianale è stato rinforzato con piastre d'acciaio tagliate al laser e tubi d'acciaio, come quelli usati per i roll-bar delle auto da rally. Su questo "telaio" è stata poi realizzata, sagomandola a mano, la carrozzeria. I sedili hanno una struttura in acciaio e sono rivestiti in vimini, le cinture di sicurezza originali vengono mantenute, mentre la lavorazione del legno e cromature è in stile marino.
Questa Jolly così speciale è basata su una FIAT 500 di serie, ed è mossa dal motore di benzina di 1,2 litri abbinato al cambio manuale. Immatricolata nell'Unione Europea (con tutte le modifiche riportate a libretto), questa macchina adorabile e divertente è offerta in condizioni "come nuova".
