128 bhp (DIN), 1,756 cc DOHC inline four-cylinder engine with two Weber twin-choke carburettors, five-speed manual gearbox, independent front suspension with McPherson struts, wishbones, coil springs and anti-roll bar, independent rear suspension with McPherson struts, trailing arms and lower radius arms, and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. While Fiat traditionally only provided technical support to privateer racers, the company embraced motorsports wholeheartedly with the acquisition of the legendary Carlo Abarth’s firm upon his retirement in late-1971. From then on, Abarth focused on rallying, while Osella was established for circuit-racing. Abarth developed the existing 124 Spider for Group IV homologation and whilst records are scant, approximately 1,000 were built. As such, the car offered here is one of the earliest products of the Fiat-Abarth union.
This car was first registered to Fiat Auto S.p.A., as it was designated as a works car for rallying. First registered on its Torino number plates, TO E52788, the car subsequently remained in Italy for all of its life, although it is not clear if it was ever actually used in competition.
Currently, it is finished in the period livery with all of the rally accessories, such as an extra light hood on the front of the car and mudguards. The interior has been stripped and period-correct bucket seats have been fitted. The vendor reports that it drives very well, and as expected, it is a true delight to use on a twisty mountain road!
