Introduced at the Paris Motor Show in October 1984, Ferrari’s stunning new Testarossa was powered by a 4.9L/380 HP flat-12 engine with heritage reaching back directly to the 312 T Grand Prix engine design of 1975. With its midmounted flat-12 featuring Bosch K-Jetronic electronic fuel injection and cutting-edge four-valve architecture, the Testarossa was the world’s most powerful sports car upon its introduction.
While demanding few compromises from its occupants for the privilege, the early Testarossa continues to deliver truly blistering performance, even by today’s jaded standards, with acceleration from rest to 60 MPH in just over 5.0 seconds, the quarter-mile in 12.9 seconds and a terminal velocity approaching 180 MPH. In fact, the Testarossa triumphantly remained the world’s fastest production car throughout its entire 11-year production run, ending in 1995. Dramatic Pininfarina styling included a shockingly low and wide presence, along with the Testarossa’s now-iconic upward-flowing side strakes ramming cool, dense air into the Testarossa’s rear-fender radiators.
While often compared to Lamborghini’s various Countach derivatives of the era, the Testarossa was a much newer and more advanced design throughout. In addition, despite its obviously stunning and muscular bodywork that declared its purity of purpose, the new Ferrari supercar received universal praise for its remarkable level of passenger comfort and drivability. Appropriately finished in Rosso Corsa (Racing Red) with a tan leather interior, this 1986 Ferrari Testarossa is a collector-worthy example with just 26,080 miles of use.
Delivering its peak rated horsepower at a usable 5,750 RPM, harnessed by a 5-speed manual rear transaxle with limited-slip differential, the Testarossa also features Ferrari’s classically gated 5-speed shifter. Double-wishbone independent front and rear suspension delivers handling and grip that remain impressive even today, and stopping power is via ventilated 4-wheel disc brakes. Other highlights include air conditioning, power windows, original Ferrari fitted luggage and Cromodora wheels. Books and records include approximately $25,000 in receipts for recent work performed.
