Launched at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show, the Mondial 2+2 replaced the Bertone-bodied 308 GT4 and heralded Ferrari’s welcome return to exclusively Pininfarina-designed bodies. Named in honor of Ferrari’s famous sports racers of the 1950s, the Mondial drew strong praise from the motoring press for its quality, usability and performance.

Among the many publications covering the debut of the new Mondial, CAR magazine reported the “… Mondial 8—superbly blending dynamic ability with masterful body design, clever electronics and Porsche-like build quality—is proof positive Maranello is reaching bright new heights.” Continuous development begat the U.S. emissions-compliant QV, or Quattrovalvole, in 1982 with its four-valve cylinder heads and a cabriolet by 1984—Ferrari’s first since the low-production 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider of the early 1970s.

From 1985, the Mondial’s V-8 engine was enlarged to 3.2L for even better response and performance with 266-270 HP on tap and mechanical specifications including Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and 9.8:1 compression. In typical Ferrari road-car fashion, further refinements were made throughout the remaining Mondial production run that continued through 1993. About 5,000 Mondials were built in total—roughly half of which were cabriolets. Performance of the Mondial was strong, with the 0-60 MPH dash taking just 6.4 seconds and a Ferrari-worthy top speed approaching 150 MPH.

This Ferrari Mondial Cabriolet from 1986 is an especially compelling example, offered from collector ownership with fewer than 6,000 indicated miles of use. Finished in red over black leather upholstery, this Mondial 2+2 Cabriolet is a highly desirable 5-speed Quattrovalvole model equipped with power brakes, air conditioning, power windows, a 1980s-style AM/FM cassette stereo head unit and, of course, Ferrari’s signature gated shift quadrant.
