First debuting at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, Ferrari’s modern iteration of the California was designed as a more livable grand tourer that broke a large swath of new ground for the venerable Maranello powerhouse.
With elegant styling by Pininfarina and a chassis designed and constructed by Scaglietti, the California was a 2+2 GT convertible with a laundry list of Ferrari firsts: the first Ferrari road car with a front-mounted V-8 engine; the first Ferrari utilizing direct gas injection; the first Ferrari with a dual-clutch, automated, 7-speed transaxle; the first Ferrari with an automated, folding hardtop; the first Ferrari built on modular architecture; and the first Ferrari with a multi-link rear suspension.
Unlike many of Ferrari’s contemporary offerings, which were often harsh, racing machines for the road, the California was designed to be a true GT, a luxurious performance car that could be driven comfortably on a day-to-day basis. As “Automobile Magazine” put it, “A grand tourer in the traditional sense of the word, Ferrari’s hardtop convertible is smooth and luxurious.
Its sound level and ride are sedate by Ferrari standards, and its cabin elegant and luxurious.” With a direct-injection 4.3L V-8 engine that bolts out 453 HP, the California is capable of 0-60 MPH in less than 4 seconds with a top speed of 192 MPH, but it can quickly be hauled back down to the speed limit by its Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes. Yet, all that performance is cocooned in a sumptuous, leather-trimmed package that features an automatic hardtop that opens in 15 seconds, power and heated Daytona seats, power telescoping steering wheel, two-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors and navigation.
