Ferrari’s 1996 introduction of the 550 Maranello at Germany’s famed Nürburgring marked a surprise return to the front-engine, V-12, two-seat berlinetta that had last been seen in the renowned 365 GTB/4 Daytona. Even more surprising was the 550 Maranello’s performance, which easily surpassed that of the midengine Testarossa it replaced while offering more mature yet still-dramatic styling and increased comfort and luggage room. Like the Daytona, the 550 was penned by Pininfarina, who once again employed the time-honored long hood, short deck design language while retaining such classic details as covered headlights, the eggcrate front grille and dual round tail lights.
As usual, the 550’s DOHC V-12 engine was the headline feature, combining 5.5L displacement with a variable-volume intake manifold, forged aluminum pistons on titanium connecting rods and four valves per cylinder to generate a hefty 485 HP at 7,600 RPM. Having re-established its leadership in the front-engine grand touring class, in 2002, Ferrari introduced the successor to the 550 Maranello: the 575M (the “M” standing for Modificata).
Visually distinguished by a more aggressive headlight arrangement and a redesigned dashboard, the 575M featured a significantly improved 5.75L version of the V-12 that resulted in a 30 HP increase to 515 at 7,250 RPM and, for the first time, the brilliant paddle-shifted F1 6-speed automatic gearbox was integrated with a new self-adjusting adaptive suspension system to control chassis pitch during gear changes.
With an odometer reading of just 58 miles, this 2002 575M Maranello gets an additional performance boost with the optional Fiorano Handling Package, which includes yellow-painted brake calipers working on vented rotors with Brembo brake pads, special front and rear springs and shocks, a 21mm-diameter rear sway bar, modified power steering ECU and special alignment specifications. Its Rosso Corsa finish is complemented with Scuderia fender shields and Pirelli P-Zero Rosso tires on five-spoke alloy wheels, while the Nero leather interior combines power windows, locks and mirrors, air conditioning, a premium sound system and power-operated carbon fiber racing seats.
