Ferrari used the name “Barchetta” to describe its first open-top cars in the late-1940s, like the fast, yet elegant, 166 MM, bodied by Touring. It was no doubt intentional on Ferrari’s part to rekindle the spirit of those magnificent and historically important cars in the company’s history when it introduced the 550 Barchetta at the 2000 Frankfurt Motor Show. The new car was an open version of the front-engine 550 Maranello, itself a modern day reimagining of Ferrari’s classic front-engine V-12 cars, like the 275 GTB and 365 GTB/4 Daytona.

In Winston Goodfellow’s book, Ferrari Road and Racing, he states Sergio Pininfarina relished designing the 550 (Maranello), honing the shape with 4,800 hours in the wind tunnel. “It reminded me of how I felt in the 1950s, when I was first working with Ferrari. Ferrari returned to the front-engine configuration with this car because the progress of technology allowed us to reach the same level of performance of a mid-engine design with better comfort and luggage room”. A limited number of 448 cars were produced to commemorate 50 years of collaboration with design partner Pininfarina. All were sold before production began in 2001.

This 550 Barchetta sports a handsome combination of Grigio Nürburgring with blue leather upholstery. It is described as being in excellent condition throughout and was originally supplied to Monaco, where it has remained ever since, only being driven on fair weather days. Having travelled 13,326 km from new, it has had just two documented owners, with the last service, including the belts, completed at 12,056 km and valid until 2014. All supporting documentation, including books and tools, is included.
