From 1958 through 1962, the Ferrari Testa Rossa name meant 12 cylinders, beauty and speed; it also meant three World Sports Car Championships, four wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and well-earned status as a genuine Ferrari legend. Ferrari resurrected the name and the basic formula to great success in the midengined 1984 Testarossa, creating yet another iconic entry in the Prancing Horse saga. Designed by Pininfarina during a period Sergio himself described as “an excess of flamboyance,” the new Testarossa broke through the social and stylistic confines that had shuttered the Italian industry’s creativity for most of the preceding decade.
In contrast to the svelte Berlinetta Boxer it replaced, the TR featured sharp lines defining sweeping surfaces, a broad tail section to accommodate the widest tires ever on a roadgoing Ferrari and, most controversially, dramatic side intake grilles that initially polarized opinion but soon became a universal symbol of performance supremacy. By the early ‘90s, Ferrari committed to improving on power and handling while refining the overall look and interior detailing. The result was the 1992 512 TR, a car that exceeded its predecessor in every important way.
Slight styling revisions suggested the contemporary 348, and slimmer spokes on larger-diameter wheels gave the 512 TR an overall lighter look while showcasing the new, larger slotted disc brakes. Power and handling improvements transformed the 512 TR, most importantly in the almost 90 additional horses extracted from the 4.9L flat-12 engine for a total of 428 HP, complemented with a noticeably flatter torque curve. A truly beautiful example offered with an exceptionally low 2,017 miles, this 1992 512 TR won First in Class at the prestigious Cavallino Classic XXIV in 2015 and has earned coveted Ferrari Classiche Red Book certification.
Its dramatic Rosso Corsa exterior opens to reveal a snappy beige leather interior complete with red-numeral instruments, small-diameter steering wheel and Ferrari’s trademark gated shifter for the 5-speed manual gearbox. Fitted with Tubi exhaust and fresh from a major service, this prize winning third-generation TR is offered with two sets of keys, books and tools, a car cover and a battery charger.
