Introduced for the 2015 model year, the Ferrari 488 GTB joined an elite lineage of turbocharged Ferrari road cars that include the 208 GT, 288 GTO and the mighty F40. Those are all hard acts to follow, but, in Maranello, the business of succeeding a great Ferrari with another great Ferrari is, well, business as usual. It was natural, then, to issue a Spider version of the 488, which debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2015. Following traditional Ferrari practice, the 488’s midmounted, twin-turbocharged 3.9L V-8 is as much sculpture as it is machine, capable of moving both car and occupants to the outer edges of glorious performance.

It accomplishes that with 661 HP at 8,000 RPM and 561 lb-ft of torque at 3,000, cranking it through Ferrari’s own F1 dual-clutch automatic transmission. At just 1,354 miles, this 2018 488 Spider presents in timeless Rosso Corsa metallic paint over its aluminum sheet metal, which also sports a body-color power-operated hardtop, Scuderia fender shields and rear air ducts, splitter, B-post trim, rear diffuser, underdoor cover and sill kick formed of lightweight carbon fiber.

Rolling on forged Matt Grigio Diamond Cut wheels wrapped with Bridgestone Potenza tires, the 488 Spider enjoys the superior handling afforded by Ferrari’s double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, supplemented with SCM3 magnetic suspension damping and CCMD carbon-ceramic disc brakes with Brembo aluminum calipers, with five different settings adjusted via a steering wheel-mounted Manettino switch. Supple black leather and red stitching dominate the interior landscape along with a serving of carbon fiber accenting the steering wheel, instrument cluster with twin TFT screens, switch and vent bezels, and a central bridge.

The yellow-faced 10,000 RPM tachometer and Cavallino-embroidered headrests are joined on the extensive feature list by AFS lighting, a suspension lifter system, dual-zone climate control, navigation, tire pressure and temperature monitors, rear parking sensors, premium Hi-Fi sound and black floor mats with red 488 Spider logos.
