The Dodge Viper was what you would call a halo vehicle, a car not built for everyone but something to help draw attention to the marque itself. This convertible from 2004 represents what became known as the 3rd generation of this special performance package. The Viper would create a lasting impression of Dodge being a serious contender in more than straight-line horsepower, with Viper both benefitting from technological advances and proving itself in the record books. One of the biggest changes beyond the body retrofitting for the Gen-3 model (with the SRT-10 designation now superseding both the GTS and R/T monikers) was the upgraded V-10 engine.
Displacing 505 CI/8.3L, this change took the rating to 500 HP. Two parallel intakes feed the valves, and one period road tester, after commenting that nothing from any other American OEM matched it, stated “It feels just like Thor’s hammer when you mash the pedal.” This is a true driver’s car that requires your respect. Keeping it in the right RPM level is allowed thanks to the Tremec 6-speed manual transmission, whose overdrive capability will send you deep into triple-digit speeds if you dare. A limited-slip differential helps traction and ventilated disc brakes with Viper-branded calipers can haul it back down to the legal MPH speed of your choosing.
The color here is Viper Bright Silver Metallic with a black soft top and matched black leather and microsuede interior. Side exhaust offers resonant sound, and Xenon headlights and fog lights let you see what is ahead. Inside are nice appointments, including air conditioning, a Sony head unit with JL audio speakers, and power mirrors. The short-throw shifter and leather-grip steering wheel make driving enjoyable, with a full complement of white-face gauges to monitor engine conditions.
Of course, there are the factory dual-roll hoops, too, just in case… Riding on 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels shod in treaded Michelin Pilot Sport tires, the Viper here remains a halo vehicle for the Dodge brand, and it could likewise be “the one” in your own neighborhood.
