Bought new at Don Whitehurst Dodge on July 30, 1985, this Dodge Ram Prospector has only traveled 781 miles since. The Ram 1500 is unrestored and still wears its factory two-tone red and white paint complete with gold pinstriping and detailing. The Prospector Package was a unique idea that essentially provided customers with a nicely equipped pickup, yet allowed them to pick and choose what they needed and leave out what they didn’t. This is part of the reason it seems so few Prospectors look exactly alike—each was custom tailored by its buyer to fit their needs. As such, some came with 6-cylinders and others had 8; some had automatics and some employed manual transmissions.
Some had vinyl interiors and others had cloth, and some had chrome bumpers front and rear. The variations go on and on with only a few common elements identifying the Prospector. A brilliant idea, the Prospector outsold the Royal and Miser Packages many fold over, and this one looks like it was used on the sales brochure cover. Very well equipped, this Ram features the long bed, or Sweptline in Dodge language, the 318 CI V-8 engine and automatic transmission, two-tone paint, a chrome front bumper and painted rear step bumper, chrome and black bed side rails, roof drip moldings and the Ram hood ornament.
Its red interior is fitted with the standard vinyl bench seat, air conditioning, AM/FM stereo and full instrumentation set in a housing of wood-grain applique. An exceptionally elegant package, this Ram rolls on the original Cooper Trendsetter whitewall tires and still has the original belts, hoses and chalk markings.
In hugely original condition, the Dodge will come complete with extensive documentation dating back to its purchase including a build sheet, new vehicle preparation sheet, an odometer disclosure statement from 1985 showing 49 miles, the original 1985 North Carolina title, purchase agreement and reassignment of the title showing 775 miles in 2014, a letter to the original owner from Don Whitehurst Dodge, the owner’s manual, ASE booklet, ID card and Customer Arbitration Board Booklet.
