In the late 1930s, Dodge began producing what would become some of the most important pickups in the world. These vehicles were robustly engineered and segued into Dodge’s first light-duty military 4-wheel drives, the 1940 Dodge VC Series trucks that begot the world’s first factory-produced 4-wheel drive pickups: the Dodge Power Wagon. Interestingly, too, Dodge would be the first of the Big Three to offer a diesel-powered pickup truck, which made perfect sense since Chrysler designed and built its own heavy-duty diesel engines in-house.

Known as the Job-Rated Trucks, the 1939-1947 Dodge pickups were highly styled with the popular Art Deco look and built at Dodge’s new Warren Truck Plant, which was a huge, state-of-the-art facility for the time. They were also some of the most confusing pickups ever built, with Dodge working hard to fill every need for every job—hence the name, Job-Rated. With a huge selection of bodies, more than 20 wheelbase lengths, six different payload classes and various-sized Chrysler inline 6-cylinder engines, ordering one could be an ordeal. But, they were hugely respected for their robustness, durability and price point.

Rare today, this 1947 Dodge WD-21 was supposedly once owned by the New York City Police Department and features a steel body that’s been painted two-tone dark blue and black. Powered by the 80 HP inline 6-cylinder engine with downdraft carburetors and a floor-shifted 3-speed manual transmission, the pickup looks absolutely stunning and has only rolled 550 miles since the engine rebuild. Sporting a 9-foot bed, the pickup is also equipped with a driver’s side spotlight, a 6-volt electrical system, accessory cowl lights, a wooden bed floor, painted steel bumpers and wheels, twin tail lights with Dodge script and a hood ornament that complements the other bright elements.

Inside, a tan bench seat matches the door panels, while utilitarian rubber floor coverings and a steel dashboard with proper gauges make up the rest of the interior.
