When my daughter Emily was two years old, her father purchased a 1988 Dodge Daytona Shelby stock car that was modified by Chrysler. While the car was not the dream car Emily had in mind (she wanted a BMW) the car has become a part of her dream for success. The car was used in the Dodge International Star Challenge Race Series 1988-89. These cars were created for a special cause: MADD (Mothers against Drunk Driving) in hopes that musicians would reach the younger generation to not do drugs or drive drunk. Sixteen cars were manufactured at the time and have sequential serial numbers.
Normally, a manufacturer would remove serial numbers and compliance labels from such cars, mark or not issue titles and destroy the vehicles upon completion of the special program they were created for; however; through administrative error this was not done. At the time, Chrysler faced substantial fines for noncompliance. The E.P.A. and D.O.T. have advised that it is not a violation of Federal law for a non-manufacturer to buy, sell and/or operate these vehicles. It is not certain but it is believed that these cars were the last factory modified vehicles to ever become available to the public.
These cars retain all safety equipment that would normally allow them to be operated on the street (such as turn signals, horn, lights and even power steering). As a factory modification these cars are extremely easy to drive and under non racing conditions yield very good gas mileage (30 miles per gallon during interstate driving). The current owner has not driven the car in normal day to day driving (it only has 3,996 miles). The #2 Dodge Daytona has a 2.2 liter Turbocharged and Intercooled Engine with special head treatment, exhaust system, and electronics; prepared by “Koffel’s Place”, Walled Lake, Michigan.
The Suspension is Mopar Performance Road Racing Shock Absorbers and fully adjustable front struts, Camber plates in strut towers for accurate and quick suspension adjustments. Other modifications include: full roll cage, 15 gal fuel cell, Konig driving seat, brake cooling air ducts, on board Halon-gas fire system, body and chassis reinforcements, Mobile synthetic oil used on the cars, champion spark plugs and window net. Emily was given the #2 Dodge Daytona Shelby that was driven by The Motor City Mad Man Ted Nugent during the Dodge International Star Challenge Race won by Nugent.
Since the early 1990s Nugent has become both popular and criticized for his conservative beliefs and his anti-drug and anti-alcohol stances. He is a national spokesman for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program, advocating the "natural highs" to be found in an outdoor lifestyle. Her Fathers intention was that the car would be kept for Emily’s college fund. Kept is has been – garage kept for 20 years. The car has been driven very little – only to the gas station and once when Emily’s parent’s moved to a new home locally. Her Step-father starts the engine every now and again to make sure the car is still in good running condition.
As of May 21, 2011, Emily has successfully completed her Undergraduate degree from Fordham University in New York City receiving her degree – a Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Political Science and a minor in History. Her future hopes are to continue to study Law and become a Judge. Emily is hoping to find a buyer for the #2 Dodge Shelby soon. “She has been looking at Grad Schools and they aren’t inexpensive”, states Edith Crews, Emily’s mother. “Since Emily was participating in dance competitions which brought her to New York for the first time at age 10 she began planning her future”. From that first visit to New York, Emily wanted to study, live and work in New York.
It has been her dream. In a way, the Dodge Daytona could be called her ‘Dream Machine.”
