The Dodge Charger Daytona remains one of the most purpose-built cars to emerge in the 1960s, and while some may balk at the excesses it seems to project, these were very special cars from a very special moment. The one-time release from 1969 offered here is showing a believed-original 6,360 miles and is documented by its original broadcast sheet. The Charger Daytona’s origins are well-documented, after Dodge racing boss Bob McCurry demanded a solution when the brand lost the 1969 Daytona 500 by inches.
The Daytona was quickly prototyped and built by subcontractor Creative Industries that summer using the premium Charger R/T model line as the basis, with this car being one of just 503 Daytonas produced for NASCAR homologation purposes, allowing it to be raced at the first event at Talladega late that season. This spectacular example retains its matching-numbers 440 Magnum V-8 engine, a 375 HP mill featuring a 4-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust. Behind this is the TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission and the A36 Performance Axle Package, which put a 3.55 Sure Grip 8.75 differential underneath it.
Equipped with power steering and power brakes, this Daytona is finished in A4 Silver Metallic paint with the black rear wing and unique “DAYTONA” tail stripe. Since this began life as an R/T, the deluxe black interior features headrest-equipped bucket seats, a center console with chrome shift handle, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, the A01 Light Group, a Solid State thumbwheel radio, a 150 MPH speedometer and a Tic-Toc-Tach with redline markings. Of course, Charger DNA is evident via chrome name plates and side body stampings, but the pointed nose, hood pins, fender-mounted air extractors, flush rear window and unmistakable rear spoiler scream speed even when standing still.
A set of 5-spoke styled road wheels and Goodyear H60-15 Polyglas GT tires complete the image this car projects. Because of rules changes made just a week after its announcement in April 1969, Dodge would never again build a model exclusively for NASCAR legalization; but back then, as McCurry said, “The name of the game is win,” and a determined buyer can still attain to that title as well.
