  • The Hang 10 Dart Sport made its debut at the 1973 Chicago Auto Show, where it was displayed on a platform with surfboards and other beach paraphernalia

Introduced in the chill of February 1973 at the Chicago Auto Show, the Dodge Dart Hang 10 concept warmed show-goers’ hearts with its sunny surf-themed presentation, surrounded on its well-lit platform with surfboards and all other manner of beach paraphernalia. Chrysler’s sister divisions might have left behind the excesses of Hemi performance by then, but they were happy to rely on their shared reputation for head-turning colors and bold appearance packages in the post-performance world of the mid-1970s. Dodge poured it on in the Hang 10 Dart for its production debut in 1974.

Based on the standard Dart Sport coupe, the Hang 10 was only offered in 1974 and 1975, and examples such as this one from the Wayne Schmeeckle Collection are rare indeed. Powered by the durable G-code 318 CI V-8 mated to a console-shifted 3-speed automatic, this Hang 10 Dart is equipped with air conditioning, power steering, Goodyear Polyglas E70-14 tires on 14-inch Rallye wheels, chromed racing mirrors, bright roof drip-rail and wheel-arch trim, and an AM/FM radio. The Dart’s original fender tag displays the A63-code for the Hang 10 option, which started with code-W1 Eggshell White paint.

To that blank canvas was added special blue and red Hang 10 striping on the hood; two more stripes extended along the body sides, both ending in waves curling over a surfer, and a Hang 10 graphic extended across the rear panel between the tail lights. Things got even more festive in the white bucket-seat interior, which was adorned with a bright combination of white-, orange-, blue- and yellow-striped vinyl seats and door panels, a painted center console and dash with wood-grain trim surrounding the instruments, all tied together with wild orange shag carpeting.

Fitted with a fold-down rear seat to accommodate a small surfboard and provide room for cooler storage for those long sunny days at the beach, this Hang 10 Dart is a great opportunity for adding a rare and colorful exclamation point to any Mopar collection.
