It took a mere two hours after the last military vehicle rolled off a Dodge assembly line in 1945 for the company to proclaim that it was back in the business of mass producing pickup trucks for domestic civilian use. In fact, Dodge had continued to produce their pickups during the war, but the numbers were miniscule in comparison to military production. According to the Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hill, Michigan, a scant 1,542 ½ ton Pickups were built in the final year of wartime production.
Even in the midst of wartime, the very few Dodge trucks sold to the civilian market were available with Deluxe cab equipment, which brought more comfortable seat and back cushions, a driver’s side armrest and sun visor, dual electric windshield wipers and chrome trim around the windshield. The inline-6 L-head engine powering the WC series ½ ton trucks was unchanged from 1942, producing 95 HP and a hefty 172 lb-ft of torque. The stronger 1942 chassis and clutch housing and higher capacity radiator were also carried over. Built in California, this 1946 Dodge ½ ton pickup incorporates all those features in a very nice frame-off restoration completed in 1997 and well preserved today.
Driven just 5,000 miles in the intervening years, it was finished in factory correct Dark Blue and features matching pinstriped steel wheels with chromed center caps and trim rings, Whitewall tires, the aforementioned optional Deluxe package, chromed bumpers and step plates and another desirable option, an auxiliary right tail lamp with brake lights and turn signals. The cargo bed boasts a glowing varnished Oak floor and side fences. A multiple award winner, this rare wartime Dodge WC pickup competed in a Concours d’Elegance in 2015.
It is offered with a shop manual, parts list manual and miscellaneous literature. – Contrary to the printed catalog description, this Dodge pickup is a 1946 model.
