The subject of a comprehensive body-off restoration, this 1940 Dodge Luxury Liner convertible presents beautifully in Spar Beige. One of just 2,100 convertibles built by Dodge in 1940, this one is powered by the 218 CI L-head inline 6-cylinder engine and 3-speed manual transmission. The black convertible top protects the Deep Maroon leather interior, which is fitted with a fold-down rear seat, a Mopar Deluxe Heater and full instrumentation. Rolling on color-keyed steel wheels with chrome center caps, Coker wide whitewall tires highlight the look. The chrome and stainless has been refinished, and the car is complete with the split windshield, bumper guards and a full-size spare tire.
By the late 1930s, most car makers were easing their styling toward the popular streamlined look dashed with an art deco overtone. While Dodge was no exception, the brand’s interpretation was considerably more conservative, avoiding the overt styling seen by the Chrysler Airflow, Graham Super and more expensive offerings. By including a lot of standard amenities and features as standard, Dodge customers were treated to a stunningly rewarding package.
For 1939, the division would introduce the Luxury Liner name upon the Special and Deluxe models to celebrate 25 years of producing its own cars, and for 1940, the company was pressing the envelope even further with larger seating surfaces, larger interior volume and refined materials for a more upscale experience. Established in 1900, the Dodge Brothers Company produced engines and chassis for manufacturers like Olds and Ford, but in 1914, they introduced their very first car, the Model 30-35 Touring. Using an all-steel body, Dodge Brothers automobiles also used 12-volt electrical systems, a sliding gear transmission and other advanced features.
Quickly developing a reputation for robust and technologically forward vehicles, Dodge cars became the second-highest selling vehicle in the United States by 1916.
