Unlike most 1956 American cars, Dodge sales had been so successful in 1955 that the company decided few design changes were necessary. While the front of the new Dodge remained almost identical. The side trim and tail lights were changed slightly, and the rear had fins added to stay with the times. This restored 1956 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer Convertible from the Clyde Horst Collection checks all of the boxes for a popular image of an American car from that time. This Dodge is based on a 120-inch wheelbase chassis riding on 15-inch steel wheels and 7.60-15 whitewall tires capped with the popular four-spinner Lancer wheel covers.
Optional power steering and power brakes are included with this Dodge to enhance driving safety and control, and the engine is Dodge’s Super Red Ram version of the historic Chrysler Hemi V-8 that displaces 315 CI and produces 230 HP at 4,400 RPM with a single 4-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust. A Powerflite automatic transmission does the shifting duties. This Dodge is finished in a striking two-tone combination of Wedgewood and Royal Blue, accented by a sweeping bright trim molding across the top of the body. A snug white convertible roof tops off the look. The interior is trimmed in blue and white two-tone cloth and vinyl. It is equipped with the optional Highway Hi-Fi record player.
Power seat and power windows are also part of its luxury features. Pushbutton controls for the Powerflite transmission are at the left side of the instrument panel. The body-off restoration of this Dodge was completed in 2001, and it has been in the climate-controlled care of Clyde Horst for 23 years. This car has been detailed twice a year since its restoration and won its AACA First Junior, Senior and Bomgardner Award in 2001 and an AACA Grand National First in 2002. It won an AACA Chocolate Town Trophy National in 2010 and the AACA Grand National Senior in 2016. It is also an eight-time AACA Preservation Award winner.
It won a National Chrysler Products Club award in 2004 and was Best in Class at the Amelia Island Concours in 2005. In 2013, it won the Excellence in Class and Show Sponsor’s Class at the Boca Raton Concours. It won First Place at the 2014 Hemming Concours. Its last show appearance was at the AACA meet at Williamsport, Pennsylvania. This Dodge will be the ultimate in highest quality luxury and the hit of any show or event.
