The return of a performance V-8 powered Dodge Charger after the final versions of the 1970s disappeared was met with great fanfare over 15 years ago, and this Daytona Edition R/T of that model has been very carefully preserved in that regard, having been driven only 172 miles since new. While the LX platform body design was a four-door package, the new Charger’s reintroduction in 2006 made use of the technological advances that had become part of the automotive business in the years since the 1978 discontinuation. Under the hood of this 2008 edition is the 5.7L Hemi V-8 engine, which itself is a recent development that was more than capable of performing in this body design.
Featuring electronic fuel injection, computer-controlled cylinder deactivation and a special engine cover, the third-generation Hemi powerplant is rated at 340 HP, yet met then-current emissions requirements. With underhood detailing color-coded and specifically matched to the exterior Hemi Orange paint, the engine is backed by a 5-speed automatic transmission. Of course, opting for the Daytona Group on an R/T like this got you a lot more, such as the upgraded exhaust system.
The Daytona release is identifiable by its black grille with honeycomb insert, hood blackout, “DAYTONA”-lettered rocker-level strobe side stripes, “HEMI” hood and fender callouts, front spoiler, rear air diffuser and deck-mounted wing. The tuned suspension was derived from the Mercedes-Benz E-is class and needs little explanation. Inside is upscale as well, with performance seats featuring suede inserts, orange contrast stitching and “DAYTONA” embroidery. There is remote start, an AutoStick gated-design shifter, color-matched facing, white-face gauges, a four-spoke sport steering wheel and quality audio equipment, all as standard.
Aiding the performance suspension are large 20×8-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels that look right in place on this body and wear the factory tires. Had you bought a Charger Daytona back in the old days, this might have been the way it could have been preserved. This 2008 edition carries on as part of Dodge’s ongoing history.
