The DNA of Dodge’s Daytona that began in 1969 was sometimes diluted as the brand rebadged standard models with that nameplate, but in 2008, the example offered here arrived with a new iteration of V-8 Hemi performance. Thanks to the infusion of DaimlerChrysler’s global engineering efforts, this LX platform machine might have four doors but was released to turn heads and make a performance statement. Moreover, this special Daytona Edition R/T shows only 179 miles on its odometer and serves as a representation of what came off the showroom floor as a limited release more than 15 years ago.
Under the hood is the third-generation 5.7L Hemi V-8 engine, of which the initial development had helped return the brand to competitive NASCAR racing. Featuring electronic fuel injection, active cylinder management, individual spark coils and a body color-matched engine cover, it was a modern powerplant in that era worthy of wearing the Daytona name. There is special exhaust that came only on these cars, and a 5-speed automatic transmission is mounted behind it. The suspension characteristics were based on the Mercedes-Benz E-class design and give this car excellent road manners.
With the car painted Hemi Orange, the accompanying Daytona Group also meant special graphics like the side-based strobotic striping, hood blackout paint, front and rear spoiler packages and dual body-color mirrors. The final touch was a sinister black grille with a special honeycomb insert. Once inside, one is treated to premium-design bucket seats, the AutoStick gated-design shifter in the center console, a four-spoke sport steering wheel, remote start, an audio system with CD player and white-faced gauges that include a 160 MPH speedometer. Further promoting its performance legacy are the “HEMI” hood lettering and red-trimmed retro R/T emblems front and rear.
The final touches here are the large, five-spoke, 20×8-inch, chrome-clad, aluminum wheels wearing Goodyear radial low-profile tires. Not every Charger can (or should) be called a Daytona. Limited in release and well-preserved, this 2008 Hemi edition lives up to the legacy.
