Just when Challenger fans thought they’d been delivered to Nirvana with the 707 HP Hellcat, Dodge showed it had more to stir the soul in the form of the SRT Demon. With a factory rating of 840 maximum HP and 717 lb-ft of torque on tap, the SRT Demon rivals its late-‘60s factory Pro Stock ancestors for sheer drag-strip performance, running the quarter mile in a scorching best-recorded 9.65 seconds at 140.09 MPH on 101-octane pump gas when in full race trim. Finished in classic Plum Crazy paint with a black interior, this 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon exemplifies the concept at its fullest.
The Demon design team removed approximately 200 pounds from the Hellcat while also making available such optional niceties as front and rear passenger seating, heated and ventilated front seats with Laguna Alcantara upholstery, a power tilt/telescopic steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a ParkView rear back-up camera and a premium audio system with Apple CarPlay and Sirius XM; there is even a power sunroof for additional ventilation on those flights down the 1320. Chrysler’s 6.2L/840 HP Hemi supercharged V-8 engine and TorqueFlite 8HP90 8-speed automatic transmission supply the motive power and the sophisticated engineering to deliver those 10-second runs.
The Demon’s standard Line Lock enables the smoke-billowing burnouts needed to warm the stock Nitto P315/40R18 drag radials. In Drag Mode (the most aggressive of three drive modes including Street and Sport), activating the transbrake accesses the Demon’s torque reserve to build engine RPM to load the transmission for tire-wrinkling launches, with assistance from the Drag Mode suspension settings that transfer 2,500 pounds rearward for instant hook-up. Offered with 12 miles since new and the protective plastic intact, the Demon crate package will be included as well.
