Dodge’s first Challengers showed up in 1970, and a Detroit police officer named Godfrey Qualls bought a special one, a Hemi R/T street machine that became known as the Black Ghost. In 2023, as part of the Last Call program, Dodge released 300 Black Ghost editions based on the Hellcat Redeye Widebody design to pay homage to the historic 1970 example. This example shows just 68 miles on the odometer. Of course, in keeping with the notoriety of the original, the car hosts a supercharged 6.2L Hemi V-8 engine that creates over 700 HP, far more than the original 426 Hemi did.
The Hellcat engine package was well-refined by 2023, as was the accompanying 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission and the limited-slip differential. There are also the functional SRT suspension modes for the Widebody layout and Brembo brakes here. A primary part of marketing for the car was its Pitch Black clear coat exterior with unique “Gator Grain” roof graphics, a white tail stripe and Challenger-script fender and grille badges, giving this car one of the most retro looks of any modern Challenger.
The interior is deluxe as well, upholstered with black Nappa leather and Alcantara and equipped with the Technology Group, heated bucket seats with Hellcat logos, a power driver’s seat, a split and folding rear seat, and a heated steering wheel with audio controls. Add to this dual-zone air conditioning, the Black Ghost instrument panel badge, the UConnect 8.4-inch touch-screen display, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot spot and the deluxe Harman Kardon AM/FM stereo with 18 speakers, Apple CarPlay, Google Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity. Navigation and a compass are here, plus the rain-sensing windshield wipers, ParkView back-up camera, keyless entry and a security system.
The twin-scoop hood, spoilers, shark fin antenna and very cool 20×11 Warp Speed Satin Carbon wheels complete the bad boy look. Premium from its garage door transmitter to the automatic HID headlights, this is a factory homage to one of the most recognized cars in Mopar history and an opportunity for those from the mean streets to once again own the night.
