The new-for-1970 Dodge Challenger was created to prove “you could be Dodge Material!” as the ads stated, and this car is very much an opportunity to join the pack—the Scat Pack, that is. While sales were promising, the model came in convertible format on the performance R/T platform just during this single introductory year. As a result, the car here is one of 684 Challenger R/T convertibles ever produced with the 383 CI engine, but moreover, it’s one of only 19 originally equipped from the factory with a 3-speed manual transmission. This Challenger is currently equipped with an upgraded 4-speed manual transmission for driving enjoyment.

Still featuring a matching-numbers 383/335 HP Magnum V-8 engine, this 383 Magnum came with a 4-barrel carburetor, dual-snorkel air cleaner, electronic ignition, dual exhaust with cast manifolds and chrome tips, and it showcases OEM-type underhood detailing. The exterior is finished in extra-cost High Impact FJ5 Sublime paint, with an accompanying white interior and power convertible top, yet it was ordered new as a sport-stripe delete package. Open the door to see front bucket seats, a floor-mounted Hurst Pistol Grip shifter, a Music Master AM radio and a Rallye instrument cluster with optional tach.

This car has the scalloped-design sport hood, wheel-well brightwork, 383 Magnum callouts, chrome R/T emblems and a flip-top gas cap. The finishing refinement are a set of 5-spoke styled road wheels, now wearing updated Firehawk Indy 500 white-letter tires. Painted in a color not often seen coupled to the white upholstery and featuring a very desirable Mopar convertible body style, this car already offers a certain degree of exclusivity. The following year, the slogan was, “You can’t afford NOT to be Dodge Material,” and the one-year availability of Challenger R/T droptops like this car proved that statement to be true for those who missed out in 1970.

This Challenger is an opportunity to avoid missing out once again.
