Chrysler’s Town & Country set the standard for wood-bodied automobiles from 1946 until 1950. After several stillborn attempts by outside wood-body manufacturers to fulfill Chrysler Division General Manager Dave Wallace’s dream of a streamlined estate wagon, in 1941 his own engineers created an elegant fastback body constructed almost completely of wood from the front cowl rearward but for the fenders. A stylish design well suited to the dual use its name implied, the Town & Country debuted in 1946 with Chrysler-designed bodies built by Chrysler subsidiary Pekin Wood Products of Helena, Arkansas. Known as “Waltor” in memory of Walter P.
Chrysler, this multiple award-winning 1948 Town & Country convertible presents as-original in Dove Gray with White Ash framework and mahogany panels, a burgundy leather and Bedford Tan cloth interior and black canvas power top. It is one of 8,368 Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country convertibles produced in 1948, and is powered by Chrysler’s “Spitfire” 323/135 HP Straight Eight engine mated to a Fluid-Drive 3-speed manual transmission. A three-owner car since new, it was expertly restored in Wisconsin over a three-year period by Matt Joseph, who handled the mechanicals, Vintage Woodworks’ Dennis Bickford, in charge of woodwork, paint, interior and replating, and Gene R.
Wendt of Solid Gold Classics, who completed the car’s final assembly in 1991. Always well maintained, this American postwar classic is offered with the jack, spare, shop manual and parts catalog. It is equipped with front and rear bumper guards, dual chromed adjustable spotlights, AM radio and in-dash clock, heater and defroster and new Firestone wide whitewall tires, and boasts glowing woodwork, beautiful finishes and exquisite detailing. It is a multiple winner of several prestigious awards, most recently at the 2014 Sunday in the Park Concours Invitational at Lime Rock Park and the 2015 Arthritis Foundation Classic Auto Show in Dublin, Ohio, and is sure to earn more honors in the future.
The purchase of this fine automobile includes a matching burgundy leather tonneau cover, California car cover and the restoration records, pictures and notes from the second owner.
