In postwar America, spirits were up and people were looking forward to better days and finer living. One of the most sought-after, anticipated purchases for everyone was a new car. During the war, many people were holding together their old cars in anticipation of the end of conflict and an ability to upgrade their wheels. Chrysler stepped into this environment by offering the Town & Country in both sedan and convertible form. Part of these well-made cars were steel (Town) and part wood (Country).
Engineered with beautifully appointed interiors, exceptionally powerful drivetrains, fantastic chassis and their unique steel and wood bodies, Town & Country played the role of dream car right from the start. Introduced just prior to the war for the 1941 model year, they resumed production in 1946 and cost upwards of $3,000 on average, or roughly as much as a contemporary Cadillac. They were exclusive vehicles and boasted some of the best wood working the motoring world had ever seen. Today, the Town & Country is a highly coveted collector car. The Town & Country offers enthusiasts a unique step back into classic motoring melded with superb engineering.
This 1946 Chrysler Town & Country convertible went through life with only one owner until 2014. Presented in a deep maroon with a matching interior and tan top, the car received a recent mechanical freshening and retains the original metal, wood (which was refinished in 2015) and a 323/135 horsepower Straight-8 engine with fluid-drive semi-automatic transmission. An original California black plate car, this Town & Country is adorned with amber fog lights, wide whitewall tires, a Continental kit, chrome hubcaps and trim rings.
The clock, radio and power convertible top illustrate the luxurious level Chrysler built into these cars and illustrate why these models commanded such as luxury price when new.
